I don't have nearly as much free time as I did, for one, and I'm not as much of a glutton for in-game punishment as I was in my younger years. Of course, lots of things have changed since 2001. It's odd that I remember the brutal sidequest in Onimusha more than any other part of the game, but the way it played out and the ultimate reward you unlock is incredibly satisfying. But it's totally up to you to as to whether or not you even want to try. It comes late in the game, so unlocking the Bishmon Sword doesn't make the game a cake walk, but instead makes you feel like the overpowered bad-ass you've earned the right to be. Progression felt like a genuine accomplishment, and then leaving the Dark Realm with the Bishmon Ocarina is unbelievably satisfying, because all the grief and pain and frustration pays off big time, rewarding you with the item required to unlock the game's most powerful weapon. I stopped progressing in the main game until I conquered all 20 levels of the Dark Realm.Ĭonquering the Dark Realm was one of the most satisfying moments I've had in gaming. But I kept at it, getting better with each attempt. I don't recall how much time I spent, hacking and slashing my way down deeper and deeper into the Dark Realm, only to be cut down by my own lack of skill or failure to adequately prepare myself. One of those three exits is more common than the others. There are three ways to leave the Dark Realm: you can defeat all the enemies on a given level and leave from the portal going back to the surface, you can beat all 20 levels and escape through the final portal to the world of the living, or you can die. Repeat until you reach the deepest level. The concept is simple: defeat the demons in one level of the Dark Realm to open the portal to the next. The Dark Realm is an entirely optional sidequest with an incredibly valuable prize.
